The Concept of Summer Internship Program
L&T's Summer Internship Program [SIP] is a two-month long training with the company (April to June). The programme caters to students from premier B-schools, who have completed the first year of their MBA.
We recruit interns specializing in the fields of HR and Finance.
SIP has been carefully designed to supplement the academic curriculum of interns to maximize their learning and growth. SIP also gives the company an opportunity to build a long-term relationship with interns.
Projects

Each intern is assigned to a department in his / her functional stream (Finance / HR). During the summer internship with L&T, each intern works on three different types of projects –

Core project - This project is in the intern's area of specialisation. She / he is assigned to a department with one or more project(s) with specific deliverables. The role requires the interns to apply their academic inputs. The interns also do extensive research in specific areas of their specialization which lends an organisational context to their ideas.
Group project - The Group project is one where all interns work together in a team. A Director of the company is sponsors, commissions and directs their project. Interns dedicate one day every week to work on this project, reporting to the Group project guide.
The objective of the project is to provide exposure to inter-linkages between different managerial functions. The Group project also provides interns with experience of cross-functional teamwork. Past experience has proved that this has been an effective tool for interns to understand others' experiences and to learn from them.
Idea project - The objective of the Idea project is to reward initiative. The intern is encouraged to identify an area to which she/ he can contribute and evolve a practical solution. This may or may not be in her/his stream of specialization.
Stipend
During the internship period, we pay interns a stipend of Rs.15,000 p.m. and reimburse Second AC rail fare, to and fro, between their place of residence/ institute and place of joining.
Guidance
Project guides for the internship are selected, based on the positive experiences reported by the previous year's interns.
An intern is also allocated a Project Sponsor, who is typically the Head of a Department. During the course of the internship, the interns get to interact with senior officials and learn from their experience.
There is strong emphasis on competency development of the interns. As a process, on every Saturday interns undergo courses such as awareness and development programmes on personal and interpersonal competencies i.e. Planning & Organizing, Team Orientation, Drive for Result, etc.
Placement Opportunities
Interns are rigorously assessed on performance and competencies for Pre-placement Offers/ Pre-placement Interviews.
The assessment is carried out on two parameters - achievements of project deliverables and competencies displayed during the internship.

Every year, we recruit about 12 summer interns. We visit a select list of colleges to recruit for HR and Finance.

Selection Process on Campus
L&T's selection process for SIP is a rigorous two-step process. On campus, we conduct a one-hour Functional Group Discussion and an interview.
In Functional GD, students are given topics related to HRM and OB. The focus here is to assess students on communication, depth of knowledge, application of knowledge and participation. The duration of the GD is an hour - this ensures that all students get a chance to air their views. Based on the performance in the Functional GD, students are shortlisted for the interview.
The interview focuses on Personal & Interpersonal Skills and Organizational Fit. The duration of the interview is 15 to 20 minutes. Offers are usually made on the spot or on the same day.
Post-selection, L&T maintains a high level of communication with all L&T Interns, keeping them well informed about the internship.
