Close to 80 per cent of all the mining in India is for coal, by far the most abundantly available fossil fuel in the country. About 75 % of all that coal is consumed by the power industry to drive more than 50 per cent of the country's total installed capacity.

India's 11th five-year plan envisages around 57% capacity addition through coal-fired power plants. That figure could go up to 75 % according to the 12th five-year plan.
