To cater to the growing needs of the Defence & Aerospace industry, L&T’s Precision Manufacturing & Systems Complex at Coimbatore has been developing core competencies in prototyping and serial production of assemblies, sub-systems and complete systems. The core areas of operation include: precision machining, precision fabrication, special processes like heat treatment, surface treatment, assembly-integration and product validation. A strong integrated supply chain based on vendor managed inventory powers the production lines.


The Precision Machining Shop is capable of machining components and assemblies with tolerances from 1 to 50 microns on materials ranging from Aluminium, Titanium, Steel alloys and Inconel. The temperature controlled facility houses high- end CAD/CAM systems integrated with high precision 3/4/5 axes CNC machines that include turn-mills, 3, 4 and 5 axis machining centres, vertical turning centerscentres, jig boring machines, EDM- die sink, EDM- wire cut, surface grinding, cylindrical grinding and conventional machines for rough machining processes. The shop is capable of machining components up to 3m long.


Precision Fabrication Shop is capable of welding exotic materials like Titanium, Aluminium and Aluminium alloys and Steels. Welding processes include, Manual/Auto TIG, SMAW, spot welding, and orbital welding. The facility is also equipped with a 6 axis welding robot. Capabilities in fabrication span a variety of heat treatment such as carburizing, nitriding, hardening, tempering, annealing as well as heat treatment in controlled atmospheres such as argon, nitrogen. The furnaces are calibrated as per AMS 2750 every month and have been maintaining a class 2 status (less than +/- 6 deg C of temperature uniformity)

Surface Treatment:

Capabilities have been established for 23 different surface treatments that include: Titanium Anodizing, Chemical Passivation, Chemical Phosphatisation and Oxidation, Chemical Passivation, Phosphatisation Chromatisation, Copper Plating, Zinc Plating on Steel, Organic Coating, Hard Ultrasonic Cleaning, Vapour Degreasing and Painting. Since the facility specialises in precision components and assemblies, the typical bath size is 700 X 800 X 500mm

Assembly and Integration and Testing:

We are capable of integration of electro mechanical and mechanical assemblies. The facility is equipped with a Class 10,000 clean room of area 145 sq.m; temperature 18~20 Deg C and RH 55~60 % and a Cold Room of area 7 sq.m; temp 16~18 Deg C. The facility consists of a remotely controlled armoured testing facility consisting of manual and automated systems. The facility is capable of carrying out 1700 bar hydraulic and 740 bar pneumatic tests. Validation tests, including burst tests, are carried out within the facility fortified by 1.5m thick walls. We also have ESD compliant electromechanical assembly facility integrated with Simulation and Environment stress screening facility.

The operations are supported by rugged quality (AS9100 Rev C) and EHS systems (OSHAS 18001 & IS 14001).
