Mumbai: L&T Precision Engineering & Systems (PES) has marked a significant milestone in India's defence capability enhancement with the delivery of INS Samarthak, the first-of-class multi-purpose vessel (MPV) built for the Indian Navy. The delivery of the MPV, from L&T’s Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai, was attended by senior officials of the Indian Navy and L&T.

INS Samarthak has been conceptualised, engineered and built entirely in-house at L&T’s Warship Design Centre & Shipyard at Kattupalli. It has over 75% indigenous content and stands as a testament to Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.

The MPV is a highly specialised multi-role test and trials platform, to enhance future combat capabilities of Indian Navy. Named ‘Samarthak’, which means ‘supporter’, the ship is synonymous with the multi-dimensional role envisaged for the platform.

Beyond its technology development role, INS Samarthak will also support a broad spectrum of naval operations, including maritime surveillance, patrolling, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief (HADR) and environmental protection. The vessel combines cutting-edge capabilities with exceptional operational versatility. For precision control during complex marine manoeuvres, the ship is equipped with state-of-the-art Dynamic Positioning System.

With the delivery of INS Samarthak, L&T reinforces its position as a strategic partner to the Indian Navy and in elevating India’s Naval strength through world-class, indigenous engineering.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr A T Ramchandani, Senior VP & Head – L&T Precision Engineering & Systems, said: “This is a momentous occasion, and we are proud to have delivered the first of its kind multi-purpose vessel to the Navy. This reaffirms L&T’s shipbuilding capability to undertake construction of warships and showcases L&T’s commitment to national security”.

L&T’s Kattupalli Shipyard stands among India's most-advanced integrated shipbuilding and ship repair facilities, embodying cutting-edge infrastructure, world-class manufacturing capabilities and a proven track record in delivering complex defence platforms. The shipyard is currently undertaking the construction of the second MPV and three Cadet Training Ships for the Indian Navy.
