L&T has contributed to all 22 Nuclear reactors operational in India.
L&T has been accredited by ASME to use ‘N’ and ‘NPT’ stamps for construction of class 1, 2, 3 & MC vessels, class 1, 2, 3 piping systems, class 2 & 3 storage tanks, class CS core support structures & class 1, 2 & 3 shop assemblies and to supply ferrous and non-ferrous material as Material Organization (MO). We are India’s first company to get ASME N-stamp Certification, and have successfully achieved the recertification thrice so far. We are the only company in India to be audited by US NRC three times and to be successfully qualified each time and to have exported Class-1 Nuclear components under stringent US NRC regulations and ASME Sec III requirements to the United States.
L&T Heavy Engineering manufactures reactor vessels for Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) and Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs) designed technology and critical equipment & systems for heavy water plants, fuel re-processing plants and plasma reactors.
L&T’s product range includes Steam Generator Assemblies (SGA), end shields, calandria, reactor roof slabs, Control Rod Drive Mechanisms (CRDMs), SS thermal insulation panels, primary heat transport systems, fuel rod sub-assemblies, fuel transfer arms, fuelling machine carriages and trolleys, steam separators / mist eliminators, heavy water upgrading columns, exchange unit towers and internals, high-pressure heat exchangers, high and low level waste storage tanks and special equipment for in-service inspection. The business leads with over 50% market share in Steam Generators & End Shields in India.
A technology leap for ITER.
L&T has manufactured the Cryostat, the largest Stainless-Steel vacuum vessel of its kind, for the prestigious international fusion energy project – International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). The International Thermo-nuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is an international collaborative project, involving contributions from seven-member entities. ITER is building the world's largest facility to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power at Cadarache in the South of France. ITER-India - the Indian Domestic Agency (IN-DA) responsible for delivering India's contributions to the ITER Project - chose L&T for the manufacturing and installation of the ITER Cryostat
Onsite Services
We offer on-site integration and installation of massive structures of reactor main vessels, reactor safety vessels, end shields, calandria, coolant channels assembly and reactivity devices for new and operating plants. Life extension services for existing PHWRs include in service inspection and coolant channel replacement for operating nuclear power plants.
Steam generators are heat exchangers used to convert water into steam from heat produced in a nuclear reactor core. The coolant is pumped, at high pressure to prevent boiling, from the reactor coolant pump, through the nuclear reactor core, and through the tube side of the steam generators before returning to the pump.
L&T has expertise in manufacturing steam generators and various types of heat exchangers for nuclear power plants. Critical Sodium to Water heat transfer steam generators are manufactured in Dust Free Enclosures, using high end technology innovation.
We have a proven track record of manufacturing more than 42 Steam Generators for major nuclear power plants across the nation.
Reactor Heads or End-Shields are used to prevent the direct radiation field that comes from the reactor’s core region. Heavy water is circulated within End-Shield system to remove the heat generated by the radiation
L&T has manufactured and delivered more than 30 reactor heads to cater the need of Indian Nuclear Power programme.
The Roof Slab is installed as the head on the reactor main vessel to mount the reactivity control devices in PFBR design. Manufacturing of Roof Slab involves Stainless Steel Fabrication with flatness requirement of ± 12mm in ~13 meter diameter. L&T is the only organisation in India to manufacture Roof Slabs.
Nuclear reactor vessels contain core internals and coolant. They are designed to withstand high temperature and high pressure.
Calandria is reactor core vessel of CANDU type reactors, made from Stainless Steel, contains heavy water, a moderator used to moderate neutrons to achieve nuclear fission.The pressure tubes inside calandria contains heavy water as coolant which carries the heat from the reactor core.
L&T has a track record of manufacturing the Calandria since, 1969 (RAPP-II). The manufacturing of reactors more than 10m diameter involves precision fabrication with stringent tolerances.
L&T delivered the main vessel and safety vessel with highest accuracy level (i.e. within ±12mm for ~13 meter diameter vessels), manufactured from Stainless Steel at Kalpakkam for India’s First commercial Fast Breeder Reactor on schedule.
The main vessel of reactor assembly houses hot and cold sodium pools separated by an inner vessel. To contain the sodium in the unlikely event of leak in the main vessel, a Safety Vessel is provided surrounding the main vessel.
L&T has manufactured Tokamak Reactor Vessel for the fusion reactor ADITYA, the first indigenously designed and built Tokamak of India.
We are actively involved in the fabrication of various components for research reactors like Deck Plate, Fuelling Machine, Carriage and Trolley, Steam Generator Test Facility, etc.
We have supplied equipment and services to all indigenous Nuclear Power Plants and Research & Allied Projects since 1967.

Spent nuclear fuel shipping casks are used to transport spent nuclear fuel used in nuclear power plants and research reactors. Each shipping container is designed to maintain its integrity under normal transportation conditions and during hypothetical accident conditions.
L&T fabricates Spent Fuel Canisters & Casks, High Level radioactive waste storage tanks, Dump Tanks, etc.
Heavy water is used as a coolant and moderator in CANDU type reactors.
L&T specialises in manufacturing different types of heavy water Distillation Columns and Trays.
Controlling nuclear reactions is a matter of ensuring that reactor control rods assume their correct position at precisely the right time. A control rod drive mechanism is designed to insert, withdraw or maintain the position of these control rods from which neutron absorbers are suspended.
L&T has expertise in design and manufacturing of CRDMs. We have supplied 100s of CRDMs so far for nuclear utilities across the nation.
Fuel handling machines or fuel transfer arm transfers handle the fresh as well as irradiated core subassemblies between core, internal storage locations and in-vessel transfer pot.
We have manufactured and installed Fuelling Machine carriage columns, Fuel Transfer arm for nuclear utilities.
L&T has manufactured and supplied Fuel Transfer Equipment for 700MWe nuclear power plants overcoming all the critical engineering challenges.
