Engineering Futures

A STEM Education Initiative of L&T CSR

STEM (an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) has become a buzzword in the Education space over the past few years, owing to rapid advancements in this field. We are now at a stage where the number of STEM jobs are growing at a fast pace; according to the National Science Foundation, it is predicted that 80% of the jobs created in the next decade will require some form of math and science skills. However, despite having top-quality talent in India, our exam-focused education model limits students when it comes to Innovation, Problem-solving and Creativity. STEM Education comes in to fill this gap.

L&T’s focus on harnessing innovation and technology-driven solutions to address social needs was the spark that initiated our STEM Education Project ‘Engineering Futures’ -  the Project aims to create and expand opportunities for all children to access the kind of education that will enable them to navigate and lead in this technology-driven era.

To operationalise and implement this project, L&T’s CSR teams are collaborating with the American India Foundation (AIF) and Navnirmiti Eduquality Foundation. The project was launched in 2019 and as a starting point, a contest ‘Innovate to Educate’ was held inviting L&T’s employees to design innovative low-cost models for simplifying Science and Math concepts and increase the fun and engagement in learning. A manual based on selected models from this contest were distributed to the schools as aid for teachers, to explain concepts more effectively, thereby carrying “L&T signature” in STEM content.

From 2019 to 2021the project reached out to 103 Government schools across the country, tapping the potential of over 23,000 young minds of 6th, 7th and 8th classes to enable them to learn Science and Math in a practical way.

L&T’s commitment to this project covers:

  • Meeting basic infrastructural needs of the school along with STEM infrastructure
  • Running Innovation contests for teachers
  • Organising exposure visits of students to national level tech fests
  • Engagement of L&T Employee Volunteers in helping students create innovative Math and Science projects for exhibitions and contests.
  • Helping create community level STEM centres in collaboration with School Management Committees
